Mr. Interview- Let’s start with a bit about the artwork.
Che Gutierrez- When I decided to actually make an album with robot realm I wanted it to have some kind of visual identity. Most artists want that, but the whole idea behind the thing was that it was a story. I knew what i wanted. I put up some ads on craigslist for a sci fi/fantasy artist. I talked with a couple artists who were really good but weren't exactly what i was looking for. Then shortly after that, I received a reply from a storyboard artist/painter named Aleksa Jovanovic who lives in Serbia. We never met, but only corresponded through email. The artwork was done in exchange for a website (I do website design also). His website can be found here: http://aleksajovanovic.com/

MI- So you guys did a creative swap; website design for the album art. Nice! You mentioned that the album's got a story and concept behind it. Tell me a bit about that.
Che- Robot Realm started as a story...and I was also messing some electronic music at the same time. After taking a few lessons from Christian (professor at Scratch DJ Academy) using this program Reason, I needed some new kind of new music to do. I had been writing rock and acoustic stuff for a long time before, and I was ready to get into something new. I started messing with electronic sounds, synthesizer sounds, and real instrument sounds through a sequencer. Around the same time I was writing this story, which was supposed to be a book, a sci fi novel. The whole story is about a realm of robots that don't know where they came from and end up worshiping nature. The original extended name was Robot Realm- Humanity's Pipedream...The main character is a robot named Tree. He's basically a regular guy, or robot, who starts papers and books that kind of challenge the traditional ideas and views of his time. These would include mostly what the true origin of robot-kind is. A lot of the robots are very religious you see. His ideas are revolutionary in a way.

MI- How does the city of Chicago affect your music?
Che- It puts more blues in my songs.

MI- Who are some of your electronic music influences?
Che- I haven't really been into electronic music specifically, but there are many solo artists that I really love that have used electronic elements in their albums. Such as Roger Waters, Billy Corgan, Perry Farrell, and even Phil Lynott. Most of these solo artists are previously from very famous bands. Oh yeah and Paul Simon's newest album "Surprise," too. Also, the music from Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 for Super Nintendo highly influenced Robot Realm. The composer's name is David Wise. He worked for a company called Rareware which was a revolutionary video game company- to me anyway. I'm not too big on video games but that company was extremely creative and very imaginative.

MI- What can you tell us about where Robot Realm is going?
Che- Well, it started as a story or book. I might finish up a short story version of it. There is more music which is going to be in the form of a "perpetual album." It will be an album that goes on forever. I will continue to add songs to it. Basically it is a collection of all my b-sides. It is called TRASHGHOST and the idea behind the name is that you throw things away and they come back to haunt you. I will add that to the website at some point so people can check it out.

MI- A perpetual album, interesting.
Che- Yeah, to my knowledge it will be the first perpetual album in history.

MI- Anything specifically you wanted to say about the program reason?
Che- Well, I probably know less than 1% percent about how to use it. But it's a really great program. The sequencer sounds are really great. Writing music electronically is very easy and it's really fun to just make a beat and start throwing melodies over it.

MI- Why should people check out Robot Realm?
Che- Well, I think there's a group or type of people that would really enjoy the music if they had access to it. I like to think its classic. Out of the 30 to 40 songs
written, I tried to take the most classic tunes and put those on the PATH OF WONDER album.

DJ Dynamix wins MIX CROWN for KING OF LA!!!

DYNAMIX proved that he is one of the elite DJs in the current battle scene.

In addition to the battles, DYNAMIX is also the proud instructor of the Scratch course at SCRATCH DJ ACADEMY LA.

(He also moonlights as a Thundercat...and no, that pic is NOT from Halloween)

*DJ JAWA (another Scratch instructor), also took home a Crown for King of LA as he battled his way to the top! Yes, thats right- Scratch represented pretty heavy taking home BOTH crowns!!

Last week was a blur of events, traveling, and much more. In addition to Fast Company’s 6th Annual Masters of Design event, HP and Microsoft came together to celebrate the launch of Windows 7. Lots of great people were there: Andru Edwards from GearLive, Judie Lipsett of GearDiary, Hector Russo of Geeksroom, John Obeto of Absolutely Windows, Maegan Ortiz from Vivirlatino, Helena Stone from Chip Chick and Xavier Lanier from Notebooks.com.

Xavier took some great photos at the party, which are posted below. You can also see these photos and read his thoughts about the event on his Web site here.

Of course, credit for keeping the partying going goes to DJ Hapa, who certainly attracted a lot of attention. A lot of partygoers were even more intrigued when they found out he was actually using the machine to mix and play music with an application called Tracktor Scratch Pro. With its design, the HP Envy 15 fit in very well and looked like it belonged there.

In case you were wondering, the headphones donned during the party were the new Beats by Dre headphones.

The DJ community is massive with thousands of DJ's from coast to coast. However, the number of DJ's who are truly skilled at their craft falls short to those who claim the status of DJ. The ramifi- cations of a WACK DJ is devastating, you all know it and we have all experienced it. You’re on the dance floor getting your party on and the DJ drops a song that is off beat or that clears the dance floor. UNACCEPTABLE!!!

I am Mixx Mistress, an up and coming DJ whose passion for the game is rooted in a love for the art of DJ’ing and the desire to preserve the authenticity of the Hip Hop DJ. I am four weeks deep in Scratch DJ Academies/DJ101 course and I must say, this class is OFF THE HOOK!

Big ups to the Late Great Jam Master Jay for passing on his legendary DJ skills. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

The skills I have learned in just four weeks traditionally take years for a DJ to acquire and that’s contingent upon the fledgling DJ’s ability to connect with a skilled DJ/Crew. As a Scratch DJ 101 student, I am emerged in a comprehensive curriculum that is creating an undeniable foundation for my DJ career. The class is a culmination of lectures, hands on activities, and authentic DJ techniques that are sure to put me at the top of my game. Bottom line, this class is mad fun! Time just seems to fly during our two hours course. I could easily go several more hours under the skilled and engaging instruction of DJ Hapa and Ver5e. They will definitely see me in DJ151 next quarter.

My questions to all “DJ’s”:
-Do you know how to match beats creatively yet efficiently?
-Do you know how to drop your next song with out disrupting the dance floor?
-Can you handle technical issues that may arise with your equipment?

I know you want my honest opinion on the game...

First of all, its a game...its not going to replace the dj...and its not going to help you get better as a dj-

Its a bit more MPC based than anything else and the wheel and and "fader" (which is more of a transform switch) are really under utilized...

I literally played the game for 3 minutes so this isnt my full review-

I am sure in the higher levels, there are other features, but so far, the game is fun and I can see it introducing a lot of folks into the world of "djing".

Although, it makes what we do here at Scratch DJ Academy so much more important now...to continue to teach the history, culture, and artform and what it means to be a dj- so that people dont think it started with a video game...

So we were more than honored to be a part of history and be a part of Generation NXT's Hip Hop "Undivided" Festival out in Hawaii-

They invited us out to teach DJ Workshops and it was so amazing to see the response...

Czarina (the passion behind it all) let me know before we came out that Hawaii was hungry for something like this...and that the community was brewing...couldn't have been more true-

There is so much undiscovered talent on the island and so much passion when it comes to the arts...

10 excuses to avoid DJ requests 9 April, 2009 | 3.50PM

Following Steve Angello’s DJ booth fracas with Paris Hilton during Miami’s WMC, we felt it was necessary to inform our users of the best ways to avoid fighting with a clueless punter when they ask you to play “hip hop” or a certain record. Because violence is never the answer kids.

Here are 10 ways a DJ can dodge having to play a request without resorting to a fist fight. These are tried and tested excuses from out in the field and Beatportal has tried every one (maybe).

No DJ wants to be seen as a jukebox

1. “I’m just the warm up”

The golden answer to any request from a complainer is “I’m just the warm up DJ”. It’s a blanket answer that can be used for any request, be it hip hop or classical music.

The reply suggests that you’re deliberately playing records they don’t want to hear, so that the DJ after you can come on and play what they really want. That should keep them away from the DJ booth for a bit. But the real beauty of the reply is that it keeps the complainer in the club listening to your set, because they will be waiting around for the next DJ. No one likes an empty dancefloor, even if it’s just full of whiners.

2. “How long have you been here? I played it just before you arrived.”

When asked for a particular style of track, immediately reply with “How long have you been here?” Then, regardless of their response say, “damn, I’m sorry I played that track or that sound just before you got here.”

Your answer shifts the guilt back onto the complainer who will think they should have come to the club sooner, and the wonderful thing about that is that the next time they’ll be the first through the door. Then you’ll be really screwed.

3. “The guy after me plays that.”

An alternative on the “I’m just the warm up” excuse, except this one can be used to screw over the next DJ quite nicely. Afterall, a little rivalry is healthy for the scene.

You could even take it further and ask the whiner to write down their requests onto a piece of paper which you swear you will pass onto the next DJ. Then when changeover happens, point at the next DJ whilst winking at the whiner and then run home before the fireworks begin.

Another excuse that uses ‘time stamping’ to hoodwink the complainer into staying for your entire set is to count how many tracks you will need to finish your set and then say, “After X tracks, I’ll play it.” (Thanks fballoni!).

4. “The manager won’t let me.”

Shifting blame elsewhere is an old schoolboy trick, and if you say the manager won’t let you play whatever the complainer wants that should satisfy them enough to leave you alone.

You could even be really sympathetic and say “Yeah I know, I have the new Beyonce and everything, but the guy is such an asshole he only wants this underground techno shit.”

Look out for the ones that have a big sense of entitlement though, as they might be savvy enough to go straight to the manager to complain and then you’ll be forced by the venue to play Beyonce’s new one and you’ll have to smile through gritted teeth pretending that you’re really happy to do so.

Blame it on technology

5. “The CDJs/turntables/laptops are broken”

Another rainbow excuse is to blame it all on technology, because everyone has experienced a computer crash, a skipping CD or a faulty wire at one time or another.

The great thing about today’s modern DJ booth is that there’s so much that can go wrong. In the old days, it would have been difficult to use the excuse “the turntables are broken” if you were banging out mixes on the 1210s as you were saying it.

But with CDJs, turntables and laptops frequently all having a place in the booth, you can isolate one of them to the requester’s music eg: “Have you got any hip hop?” “Yes I do, but only on CDs and the CD players are broken.”

6. “Sure, I’ll put it on in just a minute.”

This little beauty was by far the most popular excuse, and it is a favourite for many DJs including Jesse Rose and Paul Woolford (both have told us they use this one a lot). It’s short and sweet, and is likely to lead to very little confrontation.

By immediately submitting to the requester it will fill them with a sense of power and satisfaction. They will walk away feeling like they run the club, and might even buy you a drink (which is a bonus).

They’ll go back to their table or to their friends happy and content, and most likely they’ll forget they ever asked you for it. But on the rare occasion they realize you haven’t actually played what they asked for yet, you can just respond, “it’s coming up next” and then keep going as you are.

DJ Q-Burns told us that he’s a big fan of this excuse too, and favours the more direct “Coming right up!” line. “Nine times out of 10 that’s the last I hear of them,” he said.

Another, perhaps safer option, is to have a girlfriend, friend of retarded monkey take the requests enthusiastically for you thereby rendering you all but innocent (Thanks jessetelluss!).

7. “I’ll play whatever you want, if you pay me $100/$50/however much they’ll give you.”

Requests tend to come most when the dancefloor isn’t busy, as club pretenders like to exercise control over their environment when they haven’t got anything better to do. But if the club really is lame, and your deep and dirty mix isn’t being appreciated in the slightest then why not take the money and run?

Every DJ should carry with them a mix CD of commercial hip hop and pop, so when the whiner requests you to play that type of music, you can demand $100 (after all they view you as a jukebox already) and then slap on the mix CD. Then you can either fake your DJing for the rest of the night, or even better, just leave the club. By leaving you’ll be silently sending a signal to the whiner that if they want shit music, they might as well just plug in their iPods.

8. Fein injury or illness

Basil from the 1970s British comedy Fawlty Towers used this trick a lot to escape all sorts of uncomfortable situations. The idea is to fake an injury that’s so concerning that the requester forgets all about the music and worries about you instead.

Fainting is a good one, puking is better. No one likes seeing somebody puke, and the smell should hopefully discourage anybody else from coming near the booth again.

If you’re really desperate you could pretend that you have cancer and only found out about it today (*sniff). No one likes to talk about cancer.

9. “What was that? What was that?” (Twitterati’s favourite)

Nightclubs are loud environments and DJs are likely going deaf, so use these two facts to your advantage and pretend you can’t hear a damn word the complainer is saying.

If you keep shouting “What? Sorry. Can’t hear you!” to everything they say, eventually they will leave you alone. It might take 15 minutes, it might take half an hour, but in the end guaranteed, they will walk away.

10. “Do you know who I am? I’m Steve Angello.

The Steve Angello/Paris Hilton incident pricked up the ears of the entire tacky celeb world, so the story has traveled rather far. Hilton’s publicity machine did a good job of portraying the Swedish House Mafia man as an ogre who wouldn’t hesitate to glass a small child in the face for looking at him, but still very few people outside of the dance music scene know what he looks like. So you could actually be him, and that should probably be enough to scare most wannabes away from the booth.

So we were out at Coachella doing the "Scratch Lounge" for State Farm-

We had a tent (with A/C- thank the Lord!) in the middle of the whole field...

For those of you who came by and kicked it, learned how to scratch, made your own cd, watched Sleeper throw water on people, or participated in one of our workshops, you know that these pictures are a poor representation of the craziness of Coachella!

Operation Hideo at the Mayan

Last night was a benefit concert for our brother Hideo at the Mayan. It was a night filled with performances from some of the West Coast's finest. It was great to catch up with everyone and see faces I haven't seen in a while...someone mentioned that its ironic and symbolic how Hideo was able to bring all of these different people together...

REHAB Re-Model

Welcome to the new and improved, re-modeled, REHAB...

In all honesty, we haven't built this much since we opened up in 2004 when our original staff spent 8 months building REHAB. After this re-model, I definitely have realized that it has been 5 years...and so has my body...not able to build the way we used to!

A Blast from the Past

So I was looking through a few pictures and I found some things from the past...

Figured this was a good time of year to be a bit reminiscent and look back on some of the greatand memorable events and performances that we have had on our stage at REHAB...

So, every now and then, I will put a few pictures up and take it back a bit-

Back in 07, Nas released his "Hip Hop is Dead" album-

I guess its kind of crazy how the title has even impacted Hip Hop today. I truly believe in about half of the interviews I did or saw since he dropped the album, the question was posed, "what do you think of the statement - 'hip hop is dead'?"

We had the pleasure of having Nas on our stage and I must say...I don't think he has done a more intimate performance than that in years. He answered fans questions, freestyled a bit, performed a few songs- some old, some new, and felt at home...the true essence of a REHAB Event.

"One of the best performances I ever saw Nas do was the instore at REHAB Projects in LA. He just asked people what soinds they wanted to hear and then had a Q&A session with the audience. It was like a request line, but with Nas."

We had the pleasure of being a part of a great event in Ontario, CA in giving back to the community and especially the children of the community during holiday season. All of the kids got a chance to meet Santa, get free toys, free food, free clothes, watch a movie on a huge inflatable screen while drinking hot cocoa, and of course participate in making their very own piece of Vinyl Art aka Scratch Spin Art!

The event was a huge success and a big thanks to everyone involved!
